Project Summary
Hawona Sullivan JanzenHamline-Midway Coalition is partnering with Midway resident and artist Hawona Sullivan Janzen on a Minnesota State Arts Board supported project to show the Midway some love. Sullivan Janzen is writing a crowd-sourced 100 line love poem for the Hamline-Midway neighborhood. Each one of the 100 lines will be printed onto its own lawn sign and hosted in people’s yards starting this fall.
In addition to the lawn signs, the project has also built and distributed six new Little Free Libraries throughout the neighborhood. This fall, these libraries will host loving keepsakes, each crafted by one of several local artists. Stay turned to HMC's Facebook page and this project page for more details coming soon.
Hawona Sullivan Janzen, in partnership with the Hamline-Midway Coalition, is a fiscal year 2020 recipient of a Cultural Community Partnership grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature; and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

This week the "Love Letters for the Midway" lawn signs will be finding their new homes. Photos are already rolling in of the signs installed in their forever homes. More to come! Below is just a sampling of the rich bounty of neighbors who came to take theirs home. By next week, a full map of sign locations will be available on this page for those looking to read the whole poem in order throughout the neighborhood.

Congratulations to the seven artists chosen for the Love Letters for the Midway project team. The artists, each with current or historic connections to the MIdway, will work with lead artist Hawona Sullivan Janzen to create more than 200 keepsake art objects to be distributed through specially marked Little Free Libraries in the Hamline-Midway. More information about the artists and their projects will be coming soon. "Click and Like" the project page on Facebook and/or Instagram and check out my website for updates. Love Letters for the Midway is funded by a Cultural Community Partnership grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board.
