The play area at Hamline Park will be undergoing renovations for roughly two months starting Monday, June 28th. Improvements will be focused on removing and replacing existing play equipment and surfaces along with other enhancements like new walks, site furnishings, signage, and landscaping. The project is being funded by a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG).

Last updated in 1992, Hamline park is located at the intersection of Snelling Avenue and Thomas Avenue and is home to a variety of amenities in four sections divided by trails. The northern section of the park features a spacious playground, the eastern quarter features a recently-renovated futsal court, to the south is a basketball court as well as bike racks and additional fitness equipment, and adjacent to Snelling Avenue is open green space.

  • As part of the new futsal mini-pitch that came to Hamline Park in 2019, Target and US Soccer contributed $7,000 in additional funds to be used on improvements to the park. That money will be used on a new gathering area to include a new picnic table on a concrete slab with a grill and hopefully a shade structure one day in the future if more funds become available. As Parks & Rec enters into the construction phase of the new playground, decisions must be made about where to place this new gathering area and what size it should be.

The two proposed areas for the gathering area are highlighted in blue below. The first option would be directly north of the futsal mini-pitch. The second option would be directly east of the basketball court. The grassy patch to the east of the basketball court is centrally located and would potentially allow for a larger gathering area if new money becomes available for an additional picnic table; but it is receives no shade and would be close to bouncing basketballs coming off the court. The smaller area north of the mini-pitch would have better sight lines to the northeast entrance to the park and the playground, and it would likely be quieter and calmer.
